Public Outreach
The Stan Hywet Needlework Guild encourages folks of all ages to give needlework a try!
Members describe their stitching as relaxing, meditative, soothing, creative, fun, challenging…so many positive adjectives. There are different types of needlework that range from simple to complex, and it’s never too late to start a new hobby.
Stitchers’ Fair is a great place to pick up items to get started, or perhaps re-started, in needlework!
Adult/Child Workshop
The Guild offers a special Adult/Child workshop every year in July. It is open to the public. Each child attending must be accompanied by an adult.
The 2024 class will be held on July 9th and features a fun canvas project called Stitchin’ Dots.

Children’s Corner
Children’s Corner is a favorite event for parents and children visiting Ohio Mart on the weekend. The Guild offers the kids a selection of colorful projects that utilize plastic canvas, a large plastic needle and yarn. Guild members provide some basic instruction to the child and accompanying adult, and the child can stay and complete their project in the tent or take it home to finish later.
In the words of Committee Co-Chair Barbara Shearer, if you are a stitcher, perhaps you have fond memories of your first attempts as a child at needlework - embroidery, quilting, needlepoint, or other - as you sat beside a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, or friend. But, sometimes, no one in the family is a needleworker and the child has no mentor. From this need and to share the joy of stitching, the Children’s Corner was begun by the Guild in 2009.
The intensity of a child’s effort is a joy to behold: many will stay with their project to finish it before they leave. If a child must leave before finishing, we provide a needle and instructions for them to finish at home - or even in the car as they travel!
2023 Public Embroidery Class
In November 2023, Stan Hywet offered a series of Handcrafted at Stan Hywet workshops that included an introductory class on needlework. Several Guild members put together a beginning embroidery workshop using buttons, which is just one way to apply an embroidered embellishment to clothing or accessories.
The class sold out quickly and was a great success.
